Mwache Main Dam Downstream View

The Mwache Dam Project is on course for the commencement of reservoir impoundment from 1st October, 2026, marking a significant phase in the implementation of the Project. The main dam is 90.59% complete as at 5th August, 2026.

Construction of the 84-metre-high Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam has progressed steadily, with the placement of Lift 14 currently underway and expected to be completed by 11th August 2026. The dam has now reached above Elevation 87 metres out of the final 100 metres, reflecting the remarkable progress made. It is being completed on record time.

With the support of the Ministry Of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation leadership, the Project has maintained steady progress through close coordination of all stakeholders, including ensuring the Community concerns are heard and solved, ensuring construction remains on schedule, and preparations for the impoundment are completed on time, in readiness for October 1st 2026.

Once impoundment begins, water will gradually be stored in the reservoir until it reaches the required operating capacity. Upon completion, Mwache Dam will supply 186,000 cubic metres of water per day to Kwale and Mombasa counties, significantly enhancing water security for households and industries, and supporting economic growth across the Coast region.

"We are ready to impound the water. The progress achieved so far reflects the commitment of the Project team and all stakeholders to delivering this transformative Project on schedule," said Project Manager Eng. SAO Alima, EBS, State Department for Water and Sanitation.

The Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation, led by its Chairperson, Hon. Bowen Kangogo, MP (Marakwet East), was received at the Mwache Main Dam by the Project Manager, Eng. SAO Alima,EBS, for a site inspection to assess the Project's construction progress.(May 2026)
